Relational Monism

Relational Monism — Definition and Foundations

Relational Monism is a metaphysical framework which holds that relations are ontologically prior to the entities they appear to connect. It proposes that what we ordinarily describe as “objects”, “selves”, or “phenomena” are not fundamental units of reality, but local condensations of a wider relational field.

The theory rejects the classical assumption that reality is composed of discrete substances bearing properties. Instead, it maintains that the only primitive feature of the world is relationality itself: dynamic, continuous, and internally structured. Entities arise as temporary stabilisations within this field, and their identity is determined not by intrinsic essence but by the pattern of relations that sustains them.

Relational Monism is therefore a monism of structure rather than substance. It does not claim that everything is “one thing”, but that everything is one relational order, within which multiplicity appears as differentiated configurations. The world is not a collection of items; it is a single, self‑articulating network of relations.

This framework has implications for ontology, phenomenology, ethics, and the philosophy of mind. It dissolves the traditional opposition between phenomenon and noumenon, suggesting that the fundamental tension is not between appearance and reality, but between two relational configurations. It also grounds ethical principles in the relational nature of existence: to harm another is to disturb the relational field of which one is oneself a part.

Relational Monism is an attempt to articulate a metaphysics adequate to a world understood as process, interaction, and mutual constitution. It offers a way of thinking in which the primacy of relation becomes the basis for coherence, meaning, and responsibility.
